ALDE MEP Marietje Schaake reacts to prison sentence for activist Alaa Abdel Fattah

Dutch Member of the European Parliament Marietje Schaake (ALDE) reacts to the prison sentence for activist Alaa Abdel Fattah by an Egyptian court. "The 5 year prison sentence for activist Alaa Abdel Fattah is disproportionate. He should be freed, along with the many other political prisoners. It is high time for the EU to push President Sisi to respect the rule of law and human rights, and to ensure due process. The police and law enforcement are politically motivated, and this should end. An independent judiciary, and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms are essential ingredients if Egypt wants to be a credible and effective partner to the international community. This is especially important when cooperating in the fight against terror. But more importantly, the Egyptian people deserve a more just society, that is what they bravely took to the streets for when their revolution ousted President Mubarak."
On February 10, Marietje Schaake, together with 52 other Members of the European Parliament, submitted parliamentary questions to Vice-President/High Representative Mogherini, on the case of Ahmed Douma and 229 other activists, who were sentenced to life in prison on February 4th On January 30, Marietje Schaake together with other Members of the European Parliament, wrote a letter to High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini to call for action on the cases of Ahmed Maher, Mohamed Adel and Ahmed Douma in Egypt. On January 15, the European Parliament adopted a resolution initiated by Marietje Schaake on the situation in Egypt.
