Bot disclosure laws in the EU

Written question to the European Commission
Marietje

The European Commission has urged platforms in April to come up with a Code of Practice against disinformation and behavioural manipulation, partly to safeguard the integrity of elections. A number of internet platforms promised in a draft Code of Practice on July 17th to have "clear policies in place regarding identity and the use of automated bots on their services". Yet the accompanying annex does not provide more details on this. Later, Commissioner King stated he wanted platforms "to step up their efforts to identify and delete fake accounts and establish clear rules around bots so that they cannot be passed off as human online".

  1. Is the Commission planning to introduce bot-identification laws in the EU in this context?
  2. Is the Commission studying similar plans to introduce bot-identification laws in the US, such as the Hertzberg bill SB-1001?
