Yesterday evening the Foreign Affairs committee voted on the annual report on the situation of human rights in the world. Member of the European Parliament Marietje Schaake (D66/ALDE): "Human rights are being violated worldwide. On paper human rights are on top of the agenda everywhere, but in reality, we see that our core European values are traded away for short-term interests, take the refugee deal with Turkey for example. It is of utmost importance that Europe shows leadership, and does not let cynical deals and interests overshadow human rights. To be credible, the EU has to set the right example, and practice what it preaches.”
Because of ALDE, there is specific attention for the rise of death sentences, the suppression of human rights defenders, and the spread of tools to authoritarian regimes that can be used for espionage and censorship. Furthermore, EU foreign affairs chief Mogherini and EU Special Representative for Human Rights Lambrinidis are urged to systematically inform human rights organisations on their meetings in third countries.
The plenary vote on the report will take place in December.
