European Ministers of Foreign Affairs today imposed targeted sanctions against Venezuela. A number of high ranking officials from Maduro's government will no longer be able to travel to Europe and their assets will be frozen. Member of the European Parliament Marietje Schaake (D66/ALDE) called on EU foreign policy chief Mogherini in December to put the situation in Venezuela at the top of today's agenda.
Schaake: "A strong signal from the EU to Venezuela was sorely needed. The security services continue to commit human rights violations and do not hesitate to violently smack down peaceful protests. Democracy has become a deception. The opposition has been banned and the judiciary has become Maduro's puppet. These authoritarian developments need to be called to a halt immediately."
