Today, the European Parliament called for the immediate release of Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh. Earlier this week, Nasrin Sotoudeh was convicted to 38 years imprisonment and 148 lashes.
MEP Marietje Schaake (D66/ALDE) negotiated the resolution on behalf of the ALDE Group and responds:
"Nasrin Sotoudeh is one of the most courageous human rights defenders in the world. Last year she defended the women in court that were arrested during the peaceful protests against compulsory hijab. Sotoudeh and her family are now being punished. The Iranian judiciary once again shows its cruel nature. I am glad that the European Parliament speaks out against this today."
"Governments now must use their influence with Iran, also in meetings about saving the nuclear agreement. EU foreign policy chief Mogherini, who is in constant dialogue with Iran, must publicly call for the immediate and unconditional release of Nasrin Sotoudeh."
