On January 22nd, Marietje Schaake hosted the presentation of the EU High Level Group Report on Literacy. Commissioner Vassiliou (Education, Culture, Multilingualism, Youth and Sport) presented the motives for the report and outlined the Commissions follow-up actions. HRH Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands (Chair of the High Level Group of Experts) presented the main findings of the report. Mr. Kristian Schmidt (Director Human and Society Development, DG DEVCO) related the relevance of literacy to the EU's development goals. Finally Dr. Mmantsetsa Marope (UNESCO Director of Division for Basic to Higher Education and Leaning) argued for concerted and definitive action in the field of literacy, both within the EU and in third countries.
