The European Parliament just adopted a resolution on the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. Member of the European Parliament Marietje Schaake (D66/ALDE) is glad that her call for an EU arms embargo against Saudi Arabia was met with broad support. Schaake has been calling for an embargo since February 2015.
Schaake: "Where Trump signed a billion dollar arms deal with Saudi Arabia, the European Parliament proposes concrete measures to stop the humanitarian disaster unfolding in Yemen. More than 10.000 people have been killed and over 20 million people are on the brink of famine. While indiscriminate Saudi bombings continue and deliveries of food and medical supplies are blocked. Countries such as France, Germany and the United Kingdom need to halt their arms sales to Saudi Arabia immediately.
Schaake has repeatedly called on EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini to play a more active role to end the conflict in Yemen. The European Parliament today echoes this call.
Schaake: "A European strategy is essential to get all the parties back to the negotiating table. All the more so because the United States under Trump only add fuel to the fire by closely cooperating with Saudi Arabia. The conflict in Yemen needs to be ended as soon as possible. This is also in our interest. Yemen has become a breeding ground for radical groups and the sea mines along the coast threaten one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.
