Letter on the imminent executions of Ali al-Nimr and Dawood al-Marhoun among other 55 Saudis

On November 26, Marietje Schaake and other Members from the liberal ALDE Group in the European Parliament sent a letter to H.E. Adel Al Jubeir, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. They express their concern about the risk of imminent executions of Ali al Nimr and Dawood al-Marhoun among 55 people convicted of ‘anti-Government offences'. Please find the letter below. Marietje Schaake: "Saudi Arabia must halt its medieval punishment of people who only use their right to freedom of expression. We call on the Saudi authorities to suspend the cruel and inhumane execution of Ali al Nimr, Dawood al-Marhoun and all 55 others that are now facing the death penalty. We urge EU High Representative Mogherini to repeat this call at the highest level."
H.E. Adel Al Jubeir Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Dear Minister, As Members of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) in the European Parliament, we address to you this urgent letter following the serious media reports we have received concerning the risk of imminent executions of Ali al Nimr and Dawood al-Marhoun among other 55 people convicted of ‘anti-Government offences'. According to the international human rights organisation REPRIEVE the fears were compounded after they were taken for an announced medical examination in the prison, which could suggests their execution has been scheduled. Ali al Nimr was under 18 when he was sentenced to death by beheading followed by crucifixion for attending pro-democracy political protest. On 8 October the European Parliament has already approved an urgency resolution condemning the sentencing of Ali Mohammed al-Nimr to the death penalty and calling for the Saudi Arabian authorities, and in particular His Majesty the King of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, to halt the execution of Ali Mohammed al-Nimr and to grant a pardon or commute his sentence. We would like to reiterate this call for the halting of the execution and for the authorities to grant Ali al Nimr a pardon or commute his sentence. Yours sincerely, [18 ALDE MEPs, please see below]
