On April 5, Marietje Schaake joined CNN's Quest Means Business, stating that the blocking of social media by Turkey will have a chilling effect on investment. "We have seen many political interventions already in Turkey and it fits in a worrying trend," says Schaake. Turkey took measures following the appearance of hostage images on social media. Schaake continues, "Any remedy has to be proportionate and necessary, and has to be ruled by a judge."

"Restrictions to press freedom and internet freedoms do not bring Turkey closer to the European Union. They say they want accession, but in acts, these deeds are taking steps away from European values."
