MEP: Saudi Arabia must pardon Raif Badawi

Marietje
Member of the European Parliament Marietje Schaake (D66/ALDE) calls on the King of Saudi Arabia to grant Raif Badawi an official pardon. Schaake has written a letter to King Salman of Saudi Arabia, which was co-signed by 116 Members of the European Parliament. On June 7, Saudi Arabia's Supreme Court decided to uphold the sentence of 1,000 lashes and 10 years in prison for liberal blogger Raif Badawi. Now that the sentence has been confirmed by the highest court, only the king can grant Mr. Badawi clemency. Barbaric Badawi was prosecuted for allegedly insulting Islam on an online discussion platform, the website "Free Saudi Liberals", of which Badawi is the founder. Last January Badawi received the first 50 lashes, after which his sentence was suspended because of the severe damage to his health this caused. Schaake: "It is unacceptable that this unjust sentence is being upheld. People all over the world have called for Badawi's release and have been completely ignored. Saudi Arabia is must show merci and not such barbaric sentences." Consequences Schaake states that applying cruel and inhumane corporal punishments has to be objected by the EU at the highest level. "The EU must address the systematic human rights violations by Saudi Arabia. The relationship between the EU and "partner" Saudi Arabia is too unilaterally focused on interests such as trade, energy and geopolitics," says Schaake.
