Today the European Parliament awarded Nadia Murad en Lamiya Aji Bashar with the Sakharov Prize, the annual human rights prize from the European Parliament.
Member of European Parliament Marietje Schaake congratulates Nadia Murad en Lamiya Aji Bashar with receiving the Sakharov Prize:
“The violence used by terror group Daesh is incredibly cruel and unacceptable, they are committing genocide. That is why the European Parliament already called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice and prosecuted for crimes against humanity and genocide. Women such as Nadia and Lamiya barely survived their kidnapping, imprisonment and sexual slavery. These brutalities happened after all men in their village were killed. Thankfully these girls fled to Germany where they got a chance to a new life. Their courage to speak out and to fight for the freedom of the Yezidi´s in Iraq is an inspiration for many, and is recognized by the European Parliament today.”
