MEP Schaake responds to EU meetings on Iran

Press release
Marietje

Today, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini meets with the ministers of foreign affairs of Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Iran. They will discuss possible next steps following the withdrawal of the United States from the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA). ALDE MEP Marietje Schaake responds:

“In an already explosive Middle-East, much is at stake. While Trump is undoing agreement after agreement, Europe must show responsible behaviour and try to uphold the agreement. Mogherini should try to find agreement on Iran’s commitment in the spirit of the deal. Production of uranium by Iran is being monitored, in exchange for sanctions relief.”

Schaake continues: “These are painful times for transatlantic relations. Trump’s latest move fits in the trend of breaking international agreements: the Paris climate accord, the withdrawal from UNESCO and the attacks on international trade rules. These actions make it even more important that Europe acts united.”

Web of sanctions
There is still a lot of uncertainty about the consequences of new American sanctions. Europe must ensure clarity for companies. Schaake: “Sanctions bring European companies in a difficult position. In order to avert being hit by US sanctions, many will likely leave the Iranian market altogether. Besides meeting with Iranian leaders, we must therefore also keep talking to Washington, to prevent our companies from getting caught in a giant web of sanctions.”
