MEP Schaake responds to outcome Foreign Affairs Council

On the 14th of March 2016, the Foreign Affairs Council discussed areas of re-engagement with Iran after the lifting of all nuclear-related economic and financial EU sanctions against Iran, ahead of visit of High Representative Mogherini to Tehran in April. Member of the European Parliament Marietje Schaake (ALDE/D66) responds: "A visit of High Representative Mogherini to Iran can only be a success when she finally puts human rights such as women's rights, minorities' rights, the death penalty and freedom of the press at the top of the agenda. Any future partnership and cooperation agreement with Iran will have to include dedicated human rights provisions. The negotiations on a nuclear deal were important but have overshadowed key topics such as human rights and the role Iran plays in Syria, Lebanon and Yemen for too long." Last year the European Commission adopted a new trade strategy which emphasized how trade policy must form an integral part of the EU’s foreign policy. "Initial steps to open Iran´s economy to foreign trade and investment flows should be welcomed, but will only be successful when a truly private sector develops. This means corruption must be fought and transparency improved. The EU must act as a community of values on the global stage, this should certainly be the case in relations with Iran. The young population looks to Europe for a recognition of their aspirations towards justice and freedom."
