The European Parliament repeated its calls on the European member states to impose sanctions on Myanmar. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) today stated that at least 6700 Rohingya, including children, were killed. Member of the European Parliament Marietje Schaake (D66/ALDE) deplores that Council continues to delay imposing tougher targeted sanctions.
Schaake: "The gruelling reports about people killed and forcibly displaced illustrate that the situation in Myanmar has not improved. Member state governments therefor need to put additional sanctions in place as soon as possible. The violence against the Rohingya needs to be stopped."
Targeted measures
European ministers for Foreign Affairs gathered in Brussels on Monday. Despite several calls, the situation in Myanmar was not on their agenda. A blatant failure according to Schaake.
"We need targeted sanctions against the army officials and intelligence officers that continue committing murder, torture and rape. The trade preference Myanmar currently enjoys also need to be suspended until the country makes positive steps in the field of human rights.”
