MEP: Undermining of Turkish rule of law and freedom of expression are big concern for Europe

Marietje
Member of the European Parliament Marietje Schaake (ALDE/D66) responds to the progress report on Turkey which the European Commission published today. "It is clear that the rule of law and fundamental freedoms in Turkey are under more pressure yet again. It is incomprehensible that the European Commission delayed publishing these important findings until after the elections. For the so-called "deal" that Vice President Timmermans closed on the refugee crisis, principles apparently had to give way." European Parliament Each year the European Parliament adopts its own report on Turkey. Initiated by D66, Members asked the Commission not to delay the publication of the report for political reasons. Schaake: "I expect the European Parliament to be crystal clear about our grave concerns regarding human rights in Turkey. The judiciary is intervening politically, and this has to stop. Now that Erdogan and his AK Party have won the elections, there is an even greater responsibility for them to end the polarisation and violence in Turkey. A stable Turkey, where different people and opinions can live freely, is also of key importance for Europe and NATO." Read the key findings or the full report.
