Parliamentary questions
1 March 2011 E-001675/2011
Question for written answer
to the Commission
Rule 117
Marietje Schaake (ALDE)
Subject: Bringing Iran before the International Court of Justice
This question follows up my earlier parliamentary Question E‑7375/2010 (http://www.europarl.europa.eu/sides/getDoc.do?pubRef=-//EP//TEXT+WQ+E‑2010-7375+0+DOC+XML+V0//EN&language=EN) as well as the proposal adopted by the full Dutch Parliament on 8 February regarding investigating the possibilities of bringing Iran before the International Court of Justice. The reason for a referral to the court is that the Iranian authorities refused to allow consular assistance for Dutch-Iranian citizen Zahra Bahrami.
Bahrami was executed in Iran on 29 January.
1. Does the Commission agree that the situation of dual nationals from Iran and EU countries is similar in that no consular assistance is allowed? If not, why not?
2. Does the Commission agree that the case can best be brought before the International Court of Justice (to which Iran is a signatory as a result of its UN membership) on behalf of all EU citizens by the collective Member States? If not, why not?
