7 October 2011 E-008994/2011   Question for written answer to the Commission Rule 117 Marietje Schaake (ALDE)  Subject: The EU's response to the Arab spring: Erasmus Mundus On 27 September 2011, the Commission reported that the EU’s response to the Arab Spring involves support for neighbourhood countries’ access to the Erasmus Mundus programme (EM), by allocating EUR 66 million from the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI) to EM, from 2011 to 2015(1). 1. Can the Commission confirm that this involves a budgetary increase and that the increased budget will be invested in the period between 2011 and 2015? If yes, can the Commission confirm that this extra budget will be used exclusively for scholarships to individuals or support to higher educational institutions from European neighbourhood countries, excluding other non-EU countries? 2. Can the Commission provide a comprehensive budget of both amounts spent on culture and education in the context of the ENP over the past 4 years, as well as the breakdown of planned amounts referenced in the press release for the coming 4 years? 3.
