Plenary speech on net neutrality in the single telecoms market

Marietje
Marietje Schaake, on behalf of the ALDE Group – Mr President, tomorrow we will hopefully adopt the telecoms package, which is essential for a single digital market in Europe. Beyond ending roaming charges, which will benefit every European from 2015 onwards, we also need more access, broadband and net neutrality. Millions of Europeans do not have access to all sites, and it is important that blocking and throttling will now be illegal. However, more clarity is needed on the definition of net neutrality. Together with my colleague, Jens Rohde, I tabled amendments to safeguard net neutrality and to define specialised services. Let us be clear: we do not want to block these. We just need good definitions. By ensuring clear rules of the road for the EU digital single market and the open Internet, competition, innovation and Internet users will benefit. I want to congratulate Commissioner Kroes on her ambition and her vision. I hope she understands the needs of many European citizens as regards guaranteeing net neutrality.
