Plenary speech on the Digital Single Market report

On January 19, the European Parliament adopted its report on the Digital Single Market. Earlier this day Marietje Schaake adressed the plenary. Please read Schaake's response to the report and watch her speech in the plenary debate below. For a quick overview, see Ten take-aways from the European Parliament´s Digital Single Market resolution. Marietje Schaake (ALDE) Mr President, under the excellent leadership of Kaja Kallas we are presenting an ambitious list of wishes and details to swiftly develop the digital single market or, rather, a digital single space in Europe. Especially in these difficult times, we must deliver on the optimistic promise of room for innovation and a strong knowledge economy. These are key for internet users but also for start-ups, so that they can upscale and do not leave en masse for Silicon Valley. We list practical solutions to end geo-blocking and to harmonise 28 different laws on copyright, parcel delivery and consumer protection. But more importantly, principles such as respect for fundamental rights, fair competition and security must be robust and remain, despite the changes of the technological revolution. The open internet, open data and open access, net neutrality and the free flow of data, but not privatised law enforcement, are all important not only for Europeans but also for people worldwide. So we must also prioritise the international components such as internet governance, and strengthen people’s rights online while not allowing this to become a zero-sum relationship.
