Plenary speech on the situation in Syria

Marietje
On October 7, Marietje Schaake spoke in the plenary debate aboutthe situation in Syria. Marietje Schaake, on behalf of the ALDE Group Mr President, I note with regret that there is no one to address here. I think it is a very important debate on Syria because the war in Syria must be stopped – and our Group has been calling for more EU leadership for years. We are paying a very high price for the lack of that. Not only is it unacceptable how many people continue to be killed – now with the help of Russian bombers – but it is equally unacceptable how little unity and leadership we have seen from the EU side. The High Representative should strive to find a common EU position and develop a comprehensive plan. Our Group wishes to see a political solution, and building on local ceasefires and ending the air raids on civilians should stop the bloodshed. No-fly zones are a part of ensuring that. I find it unacceptable that Russia and Saudi Arabia and now the US are taking diplomatic initiatives and that we are absent. Russia and Saudi Arabia are certainly no honest brokers, but can we be surprised that the vacuum we left was filled by others? While there are no simple solutions, there are certainties we cannot ignore. The needs of the millions of people on the run from Assad’s bombs and ISIS brutalities far exceed the funds available. We call on you to organise a major donor conference, which should contribute to much more serious commitment to refugees in the Middle East and to the countries hosting them. Also, military success often leads to an increase in refugee numbers. It is crucial to ensure there is anticipation and coordination: we need a comprehensive EU plan to end the war in Syria now.
