The European Parliament, but especially the ALDE Group, has been very vigilant on the development of stability, democracy and prosperity in the Western Balkans and also strongly defended the need to include Bosnia and Albania in the visa-waiver trajectory. ALDE Press Release, 17.03.2010

The European Parliament, but especially the ALDE Group, has been very vigilant on the development of stability, democracy and prosperity in the Western Balkans and also strongly defended the need to include Bosniaand Albaniain the visa-waiver trajectory. However the ALDE group believes that a stable democracy can only be built on free and fair elections. ┬┤Good governance and a stable democracy are instrumental for Albania's road to European accession. Pluralism in politics is key to building an inclusive society. I encourage all political parties in Albania to act in line with European standards. Transparency is particularly important in building trust in Albanian institutions, and institutions and stability are important for economic development', notes Marietje Schaake (D66, Netherlands), who is the Spokesperson on Albania for the ALDE Group. 'I therefore expect that the Albanian government now proceeds with a serious investigation into the allegations of fraud in the June 2009 elections and appropriate steps to make sure future elections can take place in full compliance with international democratic standards.' Marietje Schaake will initiate an ad hoc delegation on behalf of the ALDE Group, and plan a visit to the country before the summer.
