Response to Trump steel and aluminium tariffs

Press release

Donald Trump just formalised his previously announced tariffs against steel (25%) and aluminium (10%). Damages for the European steel and aluminium industries are estimated to be around 6.4 billion euros. Member of the European Parliament Marietje Schaake (D66/ALDE) responds:

“Despite countless warnings, Trump’s decision today directly affects his strategic and economic allies, including the EU. This becomes all the more painful because China is the one flagrantly violating international trade rules, yet is the one set to benefit from a trade war between the US and EU. Rather, the US and the EU should be working together against the unfair trading practices of China. As soon as the measures are imposed however, trade Commissioner Malmstrom cannot wait another second in announcing countermeasures.”
