Seminar "Press Freedom in Turkey"

Wednesday 22 April 2015, 15:30-18:00h European Parliament, Brussels Room PHS 5 B 001 The conference "Press Freedom in Turkey" will be available in live streaming from 15.30 using the following link: http://go.alde.eu/livestream2
After years of political stability and economic progress, Turkey is sliding backwards in reforms and in abiding to democratic principles and the rule of law.  A serious clampdown on media and individual freedoms has started and is likely to continue beyond the general elections in June 2015. Journalists have been arrested and the authorities are cutting back the freedom of expression and media in Turkey. As a reaction, a recent resolution by the European Parliament reminded Turkey that a free and pluralistic press is an essential component of any democracy. Guy Verhofstadt, President of ALDE, and Rebecca Harms, President of Greens/EFA, have invited a number of key Turkish journalists from the major media corporations to address the issue of media freedom  in Turkey and the role that the EU could play in that field. Interpretation will be provided in English and Turkish. Marietje Schaake: "Press freedom has been restricted by the Turkish government in a systematic manner. Imprisoning journalists, censorship of social media, reporting bans, tax fines on media companies and personal attacks by politicians against editors and columnists have a severely chilling effect on free speech and media freedom." "Sadly, many journalists in Turkey have now become part of the polarized political debate, to the point of defending far-reaching political acts almost blindly. Media should not become tools of propaganda." "It is time for the EU to step up its efforts to train journalists, through exchanges in Europe. Critical thinking and the free word are often the first victims in countries where authoritarianism increases, such as in Turkey. 15:30 Opening by Guy Verhofstadt MEP President of the ALDE Group 15:45 Can Dünar Editor-in-Chief of Turkish newspaper 'Cumhuriyet' 16:00 Ekrem Dumanli Editor-in-Chief of Turkish newspaper 'Zaman' 16:15 Yasemin Congar Co-founder of 'T24 News Website' 16:30 Marietje Schaake MEP (ALDE) and Bodil Ceballos MEP (Greens/EFA) 16:45 Debate, Q & A 17:00 Conclusions by Rebecca Harms MEP President of the GREEN Group To REGISTER please fill in the form (CLICK HERE) before 17:00pm on Friday, 17th April In case of difficulty contact: elke.pingel@ep.europa.eu press-freedom-turkey-event
