Today, Marietje Schaake submitted the following written questions to HR/VP Mogherini:
On 23 August, the European Commission announced the adoption of a package of €18 million in support of economic and social development in Iran. This includes €8 million for the private sector, which will go to SMEs, selected value chains and technical assistance to Iran’s Trade Promotion Organisation. Another part will go to technical support for environmental challenges (€8 million) and drug harm reduction (€2 million).
According to the statement, it is part of a wider package of €50 million earmarked for Iran in the EU budget. The support package is one of the measures to demonstrate the EU’s commitment to the JCPOA and to offset the effect of US sanctions.
- Can the HR/VP specify under which headings under the Development Cooperation or Partnership Instruments the support package for Iran is being funded?
- Can the HR/VP specify to which sectors in Iran the rest of the support package will be allocated?
- How will the support package be monitored and evaluated and what measures will be taken to avoid corruption or other illegal uses of the EU funds?
