The market in surveillance technologies is assisting repression of human rights worldwide. At the same time, the business models of social media and search platforms are eroding the public debate in democracies, while oversight over algorithms is lacking. To turn the tables, and for people to govern technologies and not the other way around, engineers, business developers, politicians and internet users need to rise, now. Why people should govern surveillance technology and not the other way around. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
