The situation in Saudi Arabia: the destruction of Awamiya and 14 Shia men facing execution

Written Questions to HR/VP
Marietje

Today, Marietje Schaake submitted the questions below to High Representative Federica Mogherini.

In May, Saudi security forces started the demolition of the Al Musawara neighbourhood of Awamiya, a traditionally Shia town, known for its opposition to the Saudi government.

Awamiya has now been under a three month siege, parts of the city have been extensively damaged, the majority of its inhabitants have fled, those remaining lack access to basic commodities as well as medical care and various people have been killed, including civilians and children.

1.     Is the HR/VP aware of the ongoing violence in Al Musawara and if so, can she provide more detail about the circumstances that prevent a statement - condemning the violence - from being issued by the EEAS?

2.     Is the HR/VP aware of photos allegedly showing the use by Saudi security forces of Canadian supplied vehicles in the town of Awamiya and the subsequent confirmation by Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland to start an investigation and can the HR/VP confirm that no arms or other supporting military material sold by EU member states is being used by Saudi forces in Awamiya?

3.     Additionally, is the HR/VP aware of fourteen Shia men facing imminent execution in Saudi Arabia and has she discussed their cases with Saudi officials at the highest level?
