On December 22, Marietje Schaake together with other MEPs (cross-party) submitted to Vice-President / High Representative of Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini, Parliamentary Written Questions on CIA renditions, special tribunals and Guantánamo Bay.
Authors: Sophie in 't Veld, Marietje Schaake, Ana Gomes, Eva joly, Carlos Coelho
Subject: CIA renditions, special tribunals and Guantánamo Bay
This month ten years ago the US CIA extraordinary renditions programme was revealed. Parliament set up a Temporary Committee investigating into the alleged use of European countries by the CIA for the transportation and illegal detention of prisoners. One year ago, US senator Dianne Feinstein presented the Senate Intelligence Committee Study on CIA Detention and Interrogation Program. Next year President Obama's term come to an end, but the Guantánamo Bay detention center is still in use.
How does the Commission assess the response of the EU and its member states to these facts, and what steps will the Commission take to ensure full accountability for the violations of human rights and the rule of law?
How will the Commission persuade the US authorities that criminal trials under civilian jurisdiction are the best way to resolve the status of Guantánamo detainees, rather than special tribunals, and that detainees in US custody should be charged promptly and tried in accordance with international standards of the rule of law, or else released?
What action will the Commission take with regard to the issue of Guantanamo detainees being denied necessary medical care?
