Written Questions on the enforced disappearance of Giulio Regeni in Egypt

On February 8, Marietje Schaake submitted Written Parliamentary Questions to Vice-President / High Representative of Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini, on the enforced disappearance of Giulio Regeni in Egypt. Author: Marietje Schaake Subject: Enforced disappearance of Giulio Regeni in Egypt On the 3d of February the body of Giulio Regeni, an Italian student who wrote under a pseudonym for the Italian newspaper Il Manifesto, was found nine days after he was reported missing in Cairo on January the 25th. Two autopsies confirmed that Regeni was brutally tortured. News reports in Italy have said Italian authorities strongly suspect Egyptian security forces interrogated Regeni to learn about the contacts he made as part of his research with the labor world and other activists, and tortured and killed him. According to these reports, the circumstances of his disappearance match those of many Egyptians who have been a victim of enforced disappearances. The Egyptian Association for Rights and Freedoms documented 314 cases of enforced disappearances in 2015. 1. Has the HR/VP raised this case as an enforced disappearance case with the Egyptian authorities and, if so, at what level? 2. Has the HR/VP raised the issue of enforced disappearances with President Sisi during her visit in November 2015 and if not, why not? 3. Does the HR/VP agree that enforced disappearances are a crime against humanity, and that the EU has an activity duty to end the impunity of the perpetrators of these crimes? wq-giulio-regeni-egypt
